When addressing PI, it is not enough to just brush and floss; a sophisticated protocol must be followed. The program that will be discussed in this section includes using natural antimicrobials and targeted nutritional supplements.

Antimicrobial Products
Natural, professional strength, oral hygiene products are now available. These products effectively address the periodontal issues of concerned patients and dentists. (Unfortunately government agencies restrict the use of the word antimicrobial. It is allowed only on pharmaceuticals.)

Look for these herbs and essential oils when selecting natural antimicrobial products
Ingredients: Aloe Vera, Folic Acid, Calendula flower, Echinacea purpurea tops, Gota Kola extract, Chlorophyll, Phytoplenolin Extract, Chamomile flower, Blood root, Prickly Ash Bark, Green tea leaf, Oregano leaf, Peppermint Oil, Cinnamon bark, Eucalyptus leaf, Lavender Oil, Bio-Saponin Conc., Co-Enzyme Q-10, Olive Leaf Extract, Black walnut green hulls, Clove leaf, Thyme herb, Grapefruit Seed Extract and vegetable glycerin.

These herbs and essential oils are known to kill microorganisms, reduce inflammation and rebuild damaged tissue. They are generally recognized as effective in one or more of these areas and should be included in any product purchased. A complete description of each ingredient is available in Appendix B of The Periodontal Solution: Healthy Gums Naturally.

Look for these characteristics in your selecting natural antimicrobial dental products

  • Good taste (which encourages use)

  • Promote fresh breath

  • Long-lasting

  • Heal and maintain the health of gum tissue

  • Kill existing micro-organisms at effective potency levels

Types of Products Available

Natural antimicrobial toothpaste does more than clean teeth; it also kills microorganisms in shallow pockets. Always look for products that are low in abrasion ingredients, such as calcium carbonate, silica and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). Sodium bicarbonate is also an effective plaque inhibitor.184,185,186 Toothpaste should leave the teeth feeling cleaner, and looking whiter and brighter.187,188

Natural antimicrobial mouthwashes are powerful full-strength oral rinses formulated for daily home care. They have been designed to adhere to oral tissue longer than most commercial products. Mouthwashes can also be used undiluted in handheld syringes for pocket irrigation, or as a toothpaste substitute with electric toothbrushes. Rinse for 30 to 60 seconds after brushing and flossing so there is enough time for the active ingredients to reach all areas of the mouth.

Natural antimicrobial irrigation solutions represent the foundation product in the war against PI. The solution creates an unfriendly environment that helps the body to expel the pathogens. Irrigation solutions must contain herbs and essential oils that are known for their anti-viral, anti-parasite and anti-fungal properties. They are formulated for patient and professional use in oral irrigation devices and are the ultimate weapon.

Natural antimicrobial balm or gel can be applied directly to the infected gum area. Gently massage the soothing balm into the gums around the infected teeth with a finger or cotton swab. Work the gel up under the tissue as much as possible. Antiseptic gels contain powerful ingredients; so a little amount provides a long-lasting, effective antimicrobial. They are an excellent product to use during the day, when traveling or away from an irrigator. Normally, packaging in a tube allows for convenient dispensing of small amounts directly to a problem area. The potent ingredients in these products require just a small drop to not only kill bugs but also neutralize halitosis and freshen breath.

These antimicrobial products are available to control bugs and neutralize breath mal-odor, as well as fight cavities. Look for green tea extract, which is not only a powerful antioxidant, but also has been shown to inhibit the enzyme that bacteria use to create the glue that attaches them to tooth surfaces, creating a more positive environment for cavity formation.189 Xylitol, a natural sweetener, has been shown to fight cavities and also remineralize tooth enamel.190
In the search for natural oral health products, extra folic acid is good because it increases absorption and enhances healing. Always look for natural botanical gum as the ingredient to thicken toothpaste, rather than a chemical formulation.191

Oral Nutrition

Several types of nutritional products that systemically address different aspects of PI treatment and prevention have been developed. The formulas should be recognized as ,phyto-nutrients, herbal extracts, selected co-enzymes, and specific vitamins and minerals, which strengthen and support the gums, teeth and immune system. These products, in combination with good oral hygiene, offer the potential to control PI, rebuild damaged tissue and, in many cases, prevent it from ever happening.

Immediately after a dental visit

It is very important to prevent infection following an examination or dental procedure. Always rinse with an antiseptic solution before, during and after any treatment.
Take extra vitamin C for a couple of days after a dental procedure. If local anesthesia is given, vitamin C will help eliminate the after effects.

Caution: Do not take vitamin C in large doses before receiving local anesthesia because it may reduce the effectiveness of the anesthesia.

If your gums are overly sensitive following your dental visit, be more diligent and gentle during your dental routine. You may also want to massage a soothing substance into your gums.
